When you decide to start your clear aligner journey, one of the first things that comes to mind is how long until you can wear your aligners. At Level Orthodontics, we talk to patients a lot about this time between the consultation and getting their aligners. If you know what to expect, you can plan ahead and be more prepared for your treatment here in Columbia.

There are many steps that go into making clear aligners and each one is important to make sure they fit right and work well. Your first visit is when everything starts. We check your teeth, talk about your goals and see if clear aligners are right for you at this visit. If we decide to move forward, we take pictures of your teeth. We make a precise model of your teeth using either digital scans or traditional impressions. Your whole treatment plan is based on these pictures. Braces remain a reliable option for correcting a wide range of orthodontic concerns. They gently guide teeth into proper alignment over time. With today’s modern materials, treatment is more precise and comfortable than ever.

After we have your scans, we either send them to a specialized lab or use our design tools to create your own treatment plan. This plan shows you how your teeth will move from where they are now to where you want them to be. The plan creates a series of aligners that are all a little different from each other. These aligners slowly move your teeth into place. This design process is very customized and takes into account how your teeth are shaped, spaced and aligned.

Once the treatment plan is finalized and approved, the actual making of your aligners begins. The lab uses precision 3D printing or moulding technology to create each set of aligners out of medical-grade thermoplastic. This stage requires a lot of attention to detail and quality control because each aligner is designed to fit your teeth perfectly. Depending on how complex your case is, the lab will make anywhere from a dozen to several dozen sets of aligners for you to use during your treatment.

How long does this take? It usually takes 2-3 weeks for your aligners to get to our office in Columbia after we take your scans. But this time frame can vary based on a few things. The length of time you have to wait can depend on how complex your case is, what brand of aligners we are using and how busy the lab is right now. The process may take a little longer during peak seasons but we always keep you updated and informed while you wait.

As soon as your aligners get here, we will schedule a time for you to come in and pick them up. We check to see if the first set fits well during this visit and we also give you full instructions on how to wear and care for your aligners. We also go over the treatment plan with you so you know what to expect in the next few weeks and months. This visit is a crucial step in the process because it sets the foundation for the rest of your treatment.  Early orthodontic treatment helps address developing issues before they become more complex. It supports proper jaw growth and creates room for incoming adult teeth. This proactive approach often leads to smoother treatment later on.

We know waiting a few weeks to start your treatment can seem like a long time especially if you can’t wait to start improving your smile. But the time it takes to make your personalized aligners is necessary to make sure they work well and feel good. The accuracy of designing and making your aligners is what makes clear aligner therapy so effective and helps you get the best results possible.

At Level Orthodontics we do everything we can to make the process as quick and efficient as possible. We know every day counts when you want to change your smile so we do everything we can to minimize wait times without compromising on quality. The 2-3 week wait is a small investment of time compared to the months of treatment that follow. It also ensures your aligners are made to the highest standards. We are here to support and guide you every step of the way. If you have any questions or concerns about the timeline please let us know.
